For Kids:

Shapedown is a phenomenal program sponsored by Centra and located at the Jamerson Family YMCA. Their emphasis is on family-centered interventions with education about the healthy eating and exercise, with special attention on parenting skills and strategies as well as confidence- building and developing responsibility in the child.  The Shapedown provider Mary Bice, R.N. is specially trained in clinical education in child and adolescent obesity. There is a sliding- scale for fees such that all patients should be encouraged to apply regardless of income.   Patients can call directly the Healthy Living Center at the Jamerson Family YMCA. For Adults:

Centra offers a program called LEARN which addresses weight management through Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitudes, Relationships, and Nutrition. Wednesdays 1:15-2:30pm at the Cardiovascular Group (2410 Atherholt Rd) starting May 23! This 12 week program will help you improve your blood pressure and glucose levels by preparing healthy meals and exercising regularly. Call 200-CARE (2273) for more info or click here.

Check out this guided fitness program available through the Virginia Cooperative Extension office.

The Independent Program run by Rehab Associates is another way to get one-on-one coaching.  One of the physical therapists supervises your introduction to gym equipment.  There is a small monthly fee ($35).  Rehab Associates have MANY locations including Amherst, Forest, Appomattox, Monelison, Bedford, Brookneal, Hurt –and the Clifton Street location also has a pool that you can use through this program. The Independent Program is available to anyone over age 14 and requires referral by a physician.
